The second part of a two part assignment to re-imagine a preexisting myth with a Sci-Fi or Fantasy twist. The first part of the assignment, the character sheet for the two characters, can be seen below.
I chose to interpret La Leyenda De La Lagaña Del Perro (The Legend of the Dog’s Eye Crusties), a story where an old man tries to find out why his dog keeps barking at nothing at all in the middle of the night. He finds out that the crusty tears that build up in the corners of dog’s and other animal’s eyes are what turns their eyes into gemstones that allow them to see things we cannot. In order to see through his dog’s eyes, so to speak, he must take those dried tears and rub them in his own eye. He does it, and the townsfolk never find out what his dog was seeing, because the next morning they find him dead in his bed from fright.
In my interpretation, I chose to put this story in a fantasy setting, featuring the old man Arturo, a respected alchemist who has devoted his life to finding La Lagaña De Perro, a mythical ingredient he (mistakenly) believes to be a metaphorical name for a plant, like Eye of the Newt or Hound’s Tooth. He travels in search of this mythical plant, accompanied by his beloved dog and (unknowingly) the Ghost Xochi.
